Estimate Illinois Spousal Maintenance

Enter gross income and this tool will estimate standardized net income using the 2026 Illinois HFS Gross-to-Net Income Conversion Table, then apply the current maintenance guidelines under 750 ILCS 5/504.

For most users, gross income is all you need to enter for income. The calculator also uses the marriage date and filing date to estimate guideline duration. An advanced option lets you substitute individualized statutory net income.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter each spouse’s annual gross income.
  2. Choose the appropriate HFS parenting/dependency treatment. If there are no minor children, choose the no-minor-children option.
  3. Enter the date of marriage and the date the divorce or legal-separation action was filed or is anticipated to be filed. Illinois guideline duration is based on the length of the marriage when the action is commenced.
  4. The calculator assumes the payor has no child-support or maintenance obligation from a prior relationship and that the case uses the current post-2018 maintenance tax treatment. If either assumption is wrong, the estimate may not apply.
  5. If an individualized tax calculation is more appropriate, switch the net-income method and enter the annual statutory net incomes manually.

Illinois law generally uses a standardized tax amount to convert gross income to net income unless an individualized tax calculation applies. The 2026 HFS conversion table estimates net income using standardized federal and Illinois income taxes, Social Security and Medicare, and the statutory dependency-exemption assumptions. View the 2026 HFS table. The maintenance formula itself is in 750 ILCS 5/504.

We ask this because the HFS standardized tax calculation uses dependency-exemption assumptions for the parties’ minor children. Unless a court has determined otherwise or the parties agree otherwise, Illinois law treats the parent with the majority of parenting time as entitled to the dependency exemption, which can change the standardized net-income estimate. If you are unsure which treatment applies, use the individualized net-income option.

Important: This calculator is an educational estimate, not legal advice or a prediction of a court order. The standardized conversion uses the 2026 Illinois HFS table assumptions; an individualized statutory net-income calculation can produce a different result. This calculator assumes the payor has no child-support or maintenance obligation from a prior relationship and that the matter is governed by the current post-2018 maintenance tax treatment. If either assumption is incorrect, the estimate may not apply. Guideline duration is estimated from the dates entered and depends on the length of the marriage when the action is commenced. A court must first find maintenance appropriate and may depart from the guidelines when appropriate. Using this tool does not create an attorney-client relationship.
